Headshot for Tony Frost

Tony Frost (1939 - 2013) was the first Youth Theatre Instructor at Merlyn Productions. As one of the few individuals to direct for the company, he staged “THE BOOR” alongside John Chase's “SACRED BLOOD” in a comedy & tragedy double-feature during the 2009 Season, and then in 2012 revived “The Beast In The Bag” with a cast of WTS students.

Tony Frost is best remembered as the founder of Fantasy Theatre for Children: Winnipeg's oldest children's theatre (est. 1981), which also housed THE THEATRE SCHOOL and G.D. Productions. In his 30 years as FTC's Artistic Director, he oversaw the presentation of more than 200 plays and 2,000 performances, with many students going on to careers in the performing arts.

Originally from Medicine Hat and moving to Winnipeg in 1965, Mr Frost acted and directed for both stage and television, appearing with MTC, with Rainbow Stage, and on film. Locally, he directed over 300 productions for both children & adults, and was responsible for establishing theatre for young people in Manitoba.

As a final tribute, Merlyn Productions dedicated “A Marriage Proposal” and “The Anniversary” in the ChekhovFest 2014 Master Playwright Festival to the memory of Tony: "who, after an extended run of stellar contributions to local live theatre and our own company, exited the stage mere months ahead of this festival in celebration of his favourite playwright".
